Eating Out at Restaurants in the Algarve

One of the delights of holidaying on the Algarve is the variety and value of Portuguese restaurants. Fish lovers are in for a treat, with a huge range of fresh fish available in even the smallest restaurants. Our two local restaurants provide excellent traditional food and friendly service. In Silves, there are enough excellent restaurants to go to a different one every night of the week and still not have covered them all!

Try something new - wild boar, roast suckling pig or octupus salad. Outside Silves, why not have a romantic evening meal overlooking the sea in one of the famous beach side restaurants. Or try a Brazilian rodizio –a selection of barbequed meats served Brazillian style. Talk to us when you arrive and we will use our knowledge of the local wines and restaurants to help you make an excellent choice.

The Portuguese love good food and Portuguese cuisine is a well kept secret. In all good restaurants, only fresh produce is used, often sourced froom local producers.
Soup is very popular and is always home made. Most soups have a vegetable base, with beans, chorico, bacon or pasta added. As a result, for many people, a bowl of soup and some home made bread is more than enough to fill the gap between breakfast and dinner. Caldo Verde is a wonderful Portuguese soup, made from potatoes, onions , and shredded cabbage. Dont leave Portugal without trying it.

Main course can be fish or meat. Each restaurant has its own specialist dishes, but chichen, grilled pork, steak, grilled sea bass, salmon and sea bream are almost always available. Cooked vegetables are not usually served with main courses, however the traditional mixed salad of tomatoes, onion and lettuce is a delight.

Portuguese deserts are sweet, often egg based and use local produce such as almonds, carob and figs. Many Portuguese eat fruit after a meal and there is always a wonderful selection of fresh fruit, depending on the season. Sweet, yellow melons, known as meloa, water melon and figs make a special appearance in the summer months. Strawberries too, peaches and nectarines. At other times of the year you can feast on tangerines, clemantines or large juicy oranges, dessert grapes and cherries. Finish you meal with some excellent coffee and maybe a local liquor.
